Abscesses are simply infections of the soft areas of hooves. Commonly caUSed by a puncture wound or injury, an equine hoof abcess can be quite painful and could result in lameness. Typically originating in the sole, an infection of this sort can migrate to other parts of the foot and will often open and drain. These pockets can appear as dark sores and caUSe great discomfort.

A horse hoof abscess may be an indication of thrUSh or laminitis. Corns, or bruises to the sole, can lead to abscesses. As hooves naturally expand and contract, bacteria may become trapped in the tissue, which can generate these infections as well. Knowing what to look for can lead to early detection and prompt treatment.

The earlier the recognition of a equine hoof problem the more positive the prognosis. As always, consult with a veterinarian as soon as symptoms occur. USual treatments include the following:

• The horse hoof abscess will need to be opened to allow drainage.
• Make sure the horse's tetanUS vaccination is up to date.
• Confer with a veterinarian for guidance or assistance with excavation of the infected pocket.
• Epsom soaks and other treatments will encourage drainage.
• If medication is required, USe Equicast to maintain the medicine at the proper spot.
• The cast will also protect the dressing and keep it clean between applications.

An equine hoof abcess may be prevented by following applicable foot care including systematic cleaning, appropriate shoe fitting and topical protection to name a few.
